Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi → Maasai Mara National Reserve
Your safari begins with a scenic drive from Nairobi towards the legendary Maasai Mara National Reserve, travelling through the dramatic landscapes of the Great Rift Valley and the rolling countryside of southern Kenya. As the city gradually gives way to open farmland, acacia-dotted landscapes and traditional Maasai settlements, the journey itself becomes the first part of your safari experience.
After arriving in the Maasai Mara and settling in, you will have time to enjoy lunch and relax before heading out for your first afternoon game drive. As the golden light begins to spread across the savannah, keep watch for elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, gazelles and the Mara’s famous big cats. The afternoon drive offers a wonderful introduction to the reserve and, with luck, some memorable wildlife encounters before returning for the evening.
Day 2: Full Day in Maasai Mara
Spend a full day exploring the extraordinary landscapes of the Maasai Mara, one of Africa’s most celebrated wildlife destinations. With the freedom of a full day in the reserve, there is plenty of time to explore different habitats and follow the wildlife activity of the day without feeling rushed.
An early morning game drive allows you to experience the Mara at its most atmospheric, when the savannah is cool and predators are often active.
As the day unfolds, you’ll encounter the reserve’s abundant wildlife, from large herds of plains game to elephants, giraffes, buffalo and, with some luck, lions, cheetahs and leopards.
The afternoon brings another opportunity to explore, with the warm evening light creating particularly beautiful conditions for photography.
Day 3: Maasai Mara → Lake Nakuru National Park
After one final opportunity to experience the Maasai Mara in the morning, the safari continues towards Lake Nakuru National Park. The landscape gradually changes as you leave the Mara’s expansive grasslands behind and travel through the Great Rift Valley, with its striking escarpments, rolling hills and fertile countryside.
Lake Nakuru is renowned for its diverse birdlife and beautiful surroundings, as well as its populations of rhino, buffalo, giraffe and other wildlife.
Depending on arrival time, you will enjoy an afternoon game drive around the lake and through the park, exploring its varied habitats while watching for wildlife against the dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley.
Day 4: Lake Nakuru → Lake Naivasha
Begin the day with an early morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park. The cooler morning hours provide excellent opportunities to search for wildlife, while the soft morning light creates beautiful views across the lake and surrounding landscapes.
Keep watch for rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, baboons and the many bird species that inhabit the park.
After breakfast, continue towards Lake Naivasha, one of the Great Rift Valley’s most beautiful freshwater lakes.
The atmosphere here is noticeably different, with lush vegetation, acacia trees, abundant birdlife and pods of hippos inhabiting the lake. The afternoon can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace, with an optional boat excursion providing an opportunity to experience the lake from the water and observe hippos and birdlife at close range.
Day 5: Lake Naivasha → Amboseli National Park
Enjoy a relaxed morning at Lake Naivasha before continuing south towards Amboseli National Park.
Depending on preference and timing, the morning can include a final opportunity to enjoy the lake or a nature-based experience around the surrounding area.
The journey towards Amboseli takes you through changing landscapes and rural Kenya, gradually transitioning from the Rift Valley towards the plains of southern Kenya.
As you approach Amboseli, the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with the possibility of seeing Mount Kilimanjaro rising above the horizon on a clear day.
Upon arrival, settle in and prepare for your first introduction to this spectacular elephant country.
Day 6: Full-Day Amboseli National Park
Wake up to one of Kenya’s most iconic safari landscapes, where vast open plains, seasonal wetlands and towering Mount Kilimanjaro create an unforgettable setting.
Today is dedicated entirely to exploring Amboseli National Park, giving you plenty of time to discover its diverse habitats and remarkable wildlife.
Amboseli is particularly famous for its large elephant herds, which can often be seen moving gracefully across the plains with Mount Kilimanjaro providing a spectacular backdrop. Game drives will explore the park’s wetlands, grasslands and woodland areas, where you may encounter lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and an impressive variety of birdlife.
The early morning and late afternoon also provide some of the best opportunities for photography, when the light is soft and the landscape takes on its most dramatic character.
Day 7: Amboseli National Park → Nairobi
Your final safari morning offers one last opportunity to experience the wilderness of Amboseli. An early morning game drive provides excellent wildlife-viewing conditions as the park comes alive, with cooler temperatures, active animals and beautiful morning light across the plains.
On a clear morning, Mount Kilimanjaro may provide a spectacular farewell backdrop.
After breakfast, bid farewell to Amboseli and begin the journey back to Nairobi.
As the landscape gradually changes from open wilderness to countryside and eventually the outskirts of Kenya’s capital, the safari comes to a relaxed conclusion, leaving you with memories of four very different destinations and the incredible diversity of Kenya’s landscapes and wildlife.
